Chapter Thirty-Five

“Are you taking your medication?” Josette asked Emeri early the next morning. One of his roommates had let her in, but Emeri was still in bed. She walked farther into his room and opened the blinds.

“Go bug someone else,” Emeri said with a moan. But he let her bring his pills and a cup of water.

Josette worried that there wouldn’t be enough time to save Emeri. Marc would only be staying until after Christmas, which would come in four days. Could they teach him everything in that short time? As an ordained missionary, Josette felt sure that Marc could help Emeri better than she could. Not that she wouldn’t give it her best try. Why else would she wake up so early on a Friday morning, when normally Marie-Thérèse had to drag her out of bed?

She knew her self-appointed role as Emeri’s savior helped her deal with her own loss, but there was something more. He exuded a helpless desperation she found appealing.

“You are invited to lunch at the house,” she said. “We all want you there—will you come? Please?”

He groaned. “I guess. If you promise to let me sleep in tomorrow.”

“Maybe.”

At her family’s apartment, Josette was afraid to leave him alone for a minute, and she was glad André felt the same. In fact, the whole family, except Marie-Thérèse, who was in a sphere of her own with Mathieu, went out of their way to make Emeri feel more comfortable.

Lunch consisted of a variety of foods brought by the Relief Society. There was plenty for even the pickiest eater to choose from, but Josette noticed that Emeri ate little.

Afterwards, he slipped out of the house while Josette was in the bathroom. “Why did you let him go?” she demanded from André.

“I couldn’t tie him down.” Seeing her frustration, he added, “Don’t worry, he promised to meet me at the clinic in an hour. We’re going to play basketball.”

While André was gone, Marc showed Josette how he would conduct a real missionary lesson, and Josette marveled at its simplicity. She was still studying his manual when André returned home late that evening.

“Did he seem all right?” she asked anxiously.

André’s face was serious. “For now. But I’m scared he won’t make it. He doesn’t want to try.”

“The gospel’s the answer,” Josette said. “It has to be. Let’s go teach him now.”

“Tomorrow. I left him in his underwear. He’s going to bed.”

“All right then.”

That night Josette prayed harder than she’d prayed in a long time. “Please, dear Father, let him feel the truth.”

Early the next morning, she insisted on going to Emeri’s apartment. “He may need us,” she told André. “Come with me or I’ll go myself.”

“I promised Pauline I’d take care of Emeri, and I will,” André said. “Even if it means protecting him from you.”

Josette heard the laughter in his voice and decided not to take offense.

Marc rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “I’d better come as well.”

The drive to Emeri’s was silent. One of his roommates answered the door sleepily and motioned them to go on in to Emeri’s room.
